China Before China:Dr. Qiang Dou Shares the Stories of Three Chinese Chips

August 11, 2025

The Haihe River surges, and the cultural heritage endures. On the evening of August 9, the online thematic publicity campaign named China Before China・Harmony and Coexistence officially launched at the Ancient Culture Street in Tianjin. Dr. Qiang Dou, Chief Scientist of Phytium, represented the technology sector as a guest speaker. He took the stage in Tiangong Kaiwu, a program showcasing Tianjin's new chapter of high-quality development, to share heartfelt stories about three Chinese chips.

Tiangong Kaiwu focused on General Secretary Xi Jinping's important instructions on fostering new productive forces during his inspection in Tianjin. The program highlighted Tianjin's remarkable achievements in next-generation information technology, artificial intelligence, and other fields. It featured speeches by Dr. Dou, Prof. Xiangfei Meng, Party Secretary and Chief Scientist of the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, and Prof. Xiuyun Liu, Deputy Director of the Haihe Laboratory for Brain-Machine Interaction and Human-Machine Integration, as well as Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology at Tianjin University.

Dr. Dou recounted Phytium's journey of overcoming chokepoint challenges in chip development over a decade, guided by the General Secretary's instructions. He framed this story through three representative chips from Phytium:

The first chip is FT-1500A, represents the original aspiration of China's technological development. Facing the national dilemma of lacking a self-developed core for information industries, Phytium spent three years creating China's first indigenously designed, mass-deployed high-performance general-purpose CPU. When the chip successfully lit up and displayed "hello world" on the screen after tape-out, the team erupted in celebration. "This phrase marked not only Phytium's entrepreneurial starting point but also a milestone for Chinese CPUs to stand on the global stage and achieve harmony and coexistence with the world," Dr. Dou recalled.

The second chip is S5000C. Born during Phytium's most challenging period after being added to the U.S. Entity List, the S5000C became China's first fully domesticated server CPU developed through 500 days of relentless effort in 2023. The bold C etched on the chip stands for China, symbolizing the nation's unwavering determination in technological advancement.

The third chip, D3000M, Phytium's first notebook CPU, delivers powerful computing power for domestic laptops while supporting 8–10 hours of battery life. Looking ahead, Phytium aims to enter commercial markets and compete with global chip giants. This chip embodies Phytium's vision to collaborate with ecosystem partners, driving toward an intelligent future with Chinese chips serving society and the world.

In a media interview, Dr. Dou reflected on his responsibility at the event of China Before China: This is not just a personal honor but a profound duty. As the world watches the 2025 SCO Summit, set to be held in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, China's wisdom of harmony and coexistence in modernization will shine globally.

He emphasized, "Scientific innovation, particularly breakthroughs in core technologies, is the cornerstone of national security and national rejuvenation. It is our generation's mission to showcase Tianjin's technological prowess and demonstrate the city's innovation vitality. Through self-reliant innovation, we will support the long-term stability of a shared future for humanity."

The online thematic publicity campaign named China Before China・Harmony and Coexistence was guided by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), the National Cultural Heritage Administration, and the Tianjin Municipal Committee's Publicity Department. It was jointly organized by Tianjin's Cyberspace Administration, Tianjin Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism (Cultural Heritage Administration), Nankai District Committee's Cyberspace Commission, People's Daily Online, and Tianjin Haihe Media Center, with People's Video and Tianjin Cloud Media as co-organizers. Attendees at the opening ceremony included Yi Bing Niu (Deputy Director of CAC), Li Jing Xu (Deputy Editor-in-Chief of People's Daily), and Lei Shen (Tianjin Municipal Committee Member and Minister of Publicity), among other dignitaries.
